Engagement Photo Planning and Prep

Step 1: Search for Ideas

When I began thinking about our engagement photos, I did not know where to begin. I had seen a lot of engagement photos, but did not know what I really wanted for ours. The first thing I did was search for ideas on Pinterest. I suggest that this be your first step.

You can browse some of my picks on my engagement photo board

Step 2: Talk With Your Photographer

Once I accumulated some photo ideas on Pinterest, I sent my board to my photographer. This gave her a good feel for what I was hoping to get out of our photos. We began to discuss possible locations. By looking at our pictures, she was able to suggest various locations that would fulfill our needs. Hiring a photographer you trust and get along with is very important. If you live in Arizona, you have to hire Pinkerton Photography. Kelsie is the sweetest person to work with.

Step 3: Create Outfit Lists

Once we were set on our location and photo op ideas, the outfit planning began. This was the fun part! I accumulated list after list. I made changes along the way, substituting different pieces and colors. When thinking about choosing outfits, you need to keep a couple things in mind:

Outfit Tips

Choose modest outfits
(your family and friends will see these)

Decide on a color palette and stick to it
(looks better in a photo/guest book)

Pick pieces of clothing that allow for easy movement
 (twirling, carrying, climbing...)

Color coordinate with one another
(but don't be too matchy matchy)

Go for clean and simple looks
(add fun statement jewelry/shoes)

Choose shoes that are clean and in good condition
(you'll notice smudges, wear, or dirt)

Choose outfits based on your surroundings
(forest, river, beach...)

Choose looks that reflect who you are

Step 4: Talk About Your Looks

Once your list is finalized, go over it together. The more they know ahead of time, the less time is spent telling them what to put on with what on the day of the shoot. This will allow for more time to take pictures and create lasting memories! :)
